Summer Cultivation of Mushroom Tips

During the summer, high temperatures can make the three-dimensional cultivation of oyster mushrooms in plastic bags very challenging. This method often leads to serious contamination and even complete failure of the crop. The ability of the mushroom to successfully grow is critical for summer cultivation, and it's also the main concern for farmers. Practical experience has shown that perforation and ventilation are effective strategies to overcome these challenges and ensure successful mushroom growth during hot weather.

The timing of the perforation is crucial. It should generally be done 3-5 days after sowing, when the mycelium has turned white and started to grow. If the holes are made too early, the mycelium may not have fully developed, increasing the risk of bacterial contamination. On the other hand, if the holes are made too late, the mycelium could suffer from a lack of oxygen, which can hinder its growth. It's important to use properly fermented substrates similar to those used in edible mushroom cultivation to support healthy development.

The placement of the holes must be carefully controlled, ideally within the mycelium layer or where the hyphae are actively growing. When the amount of spawn is limited or the mycelium grows slowly, it's essential to avoid punching too many holes across the entire bag. This helps prevent contamination from bacteria and pests, ensuring better results.

The size and number of holes depend on the stage of growth. A common technique is to use a chopstick with 3-4 pins to create small holes. Typically, 10-12 holes are punched around the fungal layer per bag. After the mycelium starts to develop and spread, additional holes should be made every 5-7 days, with a total of 3 perforations throughout the entire growing period.

Advantages of Perforated Ventilation and Oxygenation

1. It promotes faster mushroom growth, reducing the overall cultivation cycle. 2. It helps prevent bacterial contamination, significantly improving the success rate of oyster mushroom cultivation in summer and lowering the financial risks for farmers. 3. It enables year-round production of oyster mushrooms, helping to meet the demand for fresh mushrooms during the summer months, thus boosting the economic returns for mushroom growers.
