In order to make the most of the growing season, some farmers have started planting rice early and drying out the fields before the rice is fully mature. In some cases, they even stop watering the rice too soon after it has filled. As many know, this practice can significantly harm the rice's development and lead to a major drop in yield.
During the critical reproductive stages—such as booting and flowering—rice requires a lot of water and is very sensitive to both nutrients and moisture. If the field doesn't get enough water during this time, it can result in delayed heading, poor pollination, early plant aging, more empty grains, and lighter kernels, all of which reduce overall production. Cutting off water too early in the later growth phase can also weaken root activity and interfere with grain filling. This is especially problematic for large-panicle rice varieties that need a longer period to fill properly.
In saline-alkali rice areas, stopping irrigation too soon may cause a phenomenon known as "back stalk," where salt returns to the surface due to insufficient water, leading to severe yield losses. Therefore, it’s not recommended to cut off water in paddy fields prematurely.
The correct water management strategy involves maintaining deep water during the booting stage, ensuring sufficient water during heading, using shallow water during grain filling, and keeping the field moist during ripening. Typically, irrigation should be stopped 3 to 7 days before harvest to allow the rice to dry slightly and prepare for harvesting. Proper water management throughout the growing cycle is essential for maximizing yield and quality.
