China medical dressing market research report: where is the crux of innovation?

Business Club December 31. Currently, "product innovation" has almost become the unanimous goal of various industries. However, in the medical dressing industry, product innovation appears to be somewhat slow. Although China's medical dressing market has a large capacity, many companies have long been at a low level of competition, and industrial upgrading and technology development are slow. In the domestic market, traditional medical dressings still dominate, while modern dressings are still in the market cultivation phase. So, what caused these problems in the domestic medical dressing industry? In the first half of 2010, the third-ranking enterprise for medical dressings and general manager Lu Jianguo of Shaoxing Zhende Medical Dressing Co., Ltd. found some cruxes for the innovation of the medical dressing industry.

Why the industry is not economical

The population base of our country is huge, so the market capacity of medical dressings is also very large. According to statistics, the use of medical textiles in China has maintained an annual growth rate of over 10% since 2002, and its main product is traditional medical dressings.

Traditional medical dressing technology has a low threshold, and there are many domestic production companies, and most of them are small regional enterprises. According to statistics from May 2009, small enterprises in China's medical dressing industry accounted for more than 90%, but its total sales revenue only accounted for 53% of the total industry. This shows that: On the one hand, 10% of companies hold 47% of the market share, the market presents a certain degree of concentration; on the other hand, the existence of many small businesses also ensures that the market will maintain a certain degree of competition in a relatively long period of time.

This situation also caused China's medical dressing industry product quality risk, industrial production costs are higher. The level of funds, equipment, and experience of regional small businesses varies, and there are risks in the effectiveness and safety of sterilization. In order to meet the market demand, manufacturers must be equipped with production facilities of different specifications. However, in reality, the production capacity of many small enterprises is difficult to flexibly adapt to the production of a variety of specifications. This results in uneconomical industrial scale and high production costs. The large number of specifications also keeps the purchasing costs, inventory costs, and management costs of companies and hospitals high.

However, the existence of numerous small businesses has, to a certain extent, also prompted larger companies to find new business growth points. Some companies are consolidating the advantages of the traditional dressing market while strengthening technological and product innovation; some companies are directly connected to Europe, The U.S. leading companies cooperated to jointly explore the modern dressing market and strive to take the lead in the next round of market opportunities.

The fundamental reason for the slow development of the medical dressing industry in China is the lag and limitation of relevant standards. The lag in the standards has led to low product entry barriers, and the resulting vicious competition has hindered market development. Hospitals also lack uniform standards when purchasing dressings, and medical staffs request according to their own usage habits. Sometimes a gauze product only requires dozens of specifications. As a result, manufacturers cannot achieve large-scale industrial production. Can not fall, innovation is weak.

More than 40 years ago, the medical dressing industry in Europe and the United States also experienced a process of high product homogeneity, low technical threshold, and vicious competition in the market. In the early 1970s, European and American families began requiring medical dressings to be certified. Dressing suppliers, suppliers and industry associations took the opportunity to unify product specifications, ended the confusion of product specifications, and achieved large-scale standardized production. . At present, there are only 10 specifications for American gauze. This results in a significant reduction in the cost of dressing and supply of the dressing and a significant increase in quality. At the same time, many powerful dressing manufacturers can shift their resources to research and development of new products, thereby promoting the overall development of the industry.

In the charging system, medical dressing products can only be included in service items in China to charge, and can not be charged separately. This, to a certain extent, has caused many hospitals to place too much emphasis on prices in procurement for a long time, and quality has only been evaluated through basic "three certificates." Therefore, it is difficult for modern dressings with high costs and prices to enter hospitals, while low-cost ordinary dressings can easily enter hospitals and flood the market.

In fact, the use of modern dressings, such as disposable operating room products, can effectively control cross-infection and protect the safety of patients and medical workers, thereby reducing the country's cost for infection control. The use of more than 30 years abroad tells us that modern wet dressings can improve the speed of wound healing and healing quality, and reduce pain. What's more, compared with traditional dressings, the frequency of replacement is lower, so its actual treatment cost is lower. However, at present, many hospitals pay more attention to product prices and ignore actual medical costs. This is a misunderstanding of medical costs. At the same time, this situation has also seriously affected the incentives for companies to carry out new product development and upgrades, thereby affecting the progress of the entire industry.

Insufficient motivation for product innovation

In addition, the high rate of cross-infection in hospitals in China indicates that the self-protection awareness and clinical safety measures of hospitals, medical staff, and patients still need to be strengthened. Take surgical gowns as an example. At present, many hospitals in China still use cotton surgical gowns that have been banned in Europe and the United States. Materials used in disposable surgical gowns are mostly materials used by foreign patients or visiting clothes. The bacteria penetration test conducted in Japan showed that more than 5,000 bacteria passed through the cotton fabric in only 3 minutes, and only a small amount of bacteria passed through the nonwoven fabric in 20 hours. In accordance with foreign standards, in addition to preventing swabs, surgical gowns should also be waterproof, anti-static, anti-alcoholic, and anti-blood, which can truly protect the safety of patients and medical personnel and effectively prevent cross-infection. However, because the production of these materials requires special processing techniques, the cost and price are relatively high. In addition, with the emergence of various blood-borne diseases, ordinary non-woven fabrics (such as non-stick nonwovens, etc.) have been unable to meet the protection requirements. However, the hospital's understanding of modern dressing still needs improvement.

In the long run, the international market for medical dressings will surely develop in the direction of high-end and modern dressings. However, China's modern wound care products are still in the market cultivation stage. Wet wound care concepts and products have entered China in the 1990s. However, due to technical and quality control, our country still imports European and US industry giants. The annual sales are less than RMB 200 million. There is almost no production. In the United States, sales of modern wound care products in 2008 amounted to 3.5 billion U.S. dollars, of which wound care dressings, sealants, and anti-adhesion products accounted for 55.6%, reaching 1.8 billion U.S. dollars. It is expected that by 2013, sales of modern wound care products will be Increased to 6 billion U.S. dollars.

Clinical awareness needs to be improved

One view:

"Establish a set of reasonable industry standards, standardize the hospital's procurement mechanism, and effectively reflect the encouragement of domestic medical dressing enterprise's technological innovation in the relevant national policies and regulations and hospital procurement policies, especially to encourage modern new wound care products and disposable medical dressings. Research, which is crucial for the overall development of the domestic medical dressing industry."

Point two:

“The evolution of nursing concept is a gradual process that is gradually accepted. The evolution from traditional dressings to modern dressings cannot be achieved in one step. Traditional dressings will still have a certain market opportunity for a longer period of time. Modern wet dressings rely on more advanced medical concepts. , more suitable for the comfort feeling of the human body, higher added value and other characteristics, will be the mainstream product of the international wound dressing market for a long time now and in the future.”

In recent years, China's medical dressing manufacturing industry has grown rapidly in scale - from 10.673 billion yuan in 2005 to 35.289 billion yuan in 2009. However, our country's medical dressings have fewer self-owned brands and the industry's R&D capabilities are weak. Products still stay in the primary product stage such as cotton dressings or non-woven dressings. In foreign countries, medical dressings have become a highly developed industry.

At present, the annual growth rate of the high-value-added medical dressing market is more than 10%. The market is mainly concentrated in Europe (41%), the United States (39%), and developed countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Australia. The production and sale of high-end medical dressings in developing countries such as China and India are less, especially for special diabetic foot ulcers.

Transparent film dressings, liquid bandages, alginic dressings, sponge dressings, soft silicone dressings, silver ion dressings, etc. have excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects on burns, surgical wounds, etc. and represent the development direction of medical dressings and sanitary materials.
