Haiti's death to cholera increased to 3,333

People's Daily, January 3, according to Southern Television reported that Haitian health authorities announced yesterday that the number of people who died of cholera epidemic has risen to 3,333. In 2011, Haiti will continue to take measures to control cholera that has spread to 10 provinces so far.

The Ministry of Health stated in the communique that since the first cholera case was found on September 19 last year, 148,787 people had been infected nationwide, and 83,166 people had been hospitalized on December 26. Cholera has spread to neighbouring Dominican Republic, where more than 120 cases of cholera have been found. The Pan American Health Organization pointed out that the importance of controlling cholera epidemics in the Western Hemisphere can be seen in the cholera epidemic in Haiti.

Haiti has received assistance from many countries, mainly Latin American countries, but the epidemic is still not under control and it is estimated that the death toll exceeds the number that has been notified because it is very difficult for doctors to reach there in remote areas. Many of the dead were not buried, because for religious reasons, their families were unwilling to bury the dead in ordinary pits. Local agencies and foreign doctors continue to educate residents on the control of cholera epidemics and the necessary hygiene measures. (Guan Yanzhong)
