Five techniques for feeding and management of goose

1. Grazing Distance Matters. Geese are herbivorous waterfowl that have a natural instinct to return to their nesting area when laying eggs. Therefore, it's important not to graze them too far away from the nesting site. When geese are grazing, they often stretch their necks and make loud calls, which is a sign that they are preparing to lay eggs. At this point, it's best to bring the hens back to the shed for proper management and egg production. 2. Provide Sufficient Feed. Starting four weeks before egg-laying, ensure that geese receive a balanced diet. This includes 25-30% grains, 70% grass, and 70% leaves in their feed. Offer 250-300 grams of feed per day, making sure they have constant access to high-quality roughage such as cereal grains or hay powder. While grazing, provide a small amount of concentrated feed to supplement their nutrition. 3. Night Feeding Boosts Egg Production. Feeding geese at night is an effective way to increase their egg production. Especially during the pre-laying and laying periods, adding one or two night feedings can significantly improve the number of eggs laid. With proper feeding, each goose can produce between 40 to 80 eggs per year. 4. Proper Grouping for Breeding. It’s essential to form stable groups of geese before the breeding season begins. This helps reduce stress and confusion among the flock, which can affect the fertilization rate of the eggs. A recommended ratio is one male goose for every six females, ensuring optimal mating conditions. 5. Manual Assistance During Mating. To enhance the fertilization rate, manually assist in the mating process. Hold the female goose by the feet and wings, and guide the male goose close. When the male steps onto the female’s back, gently hold her body and wings to facilitate mating. After several sessions, the male will become more responsive and actively seek out the female. Also, when the female lays eggs, manual assistance can help improve the success of fertilization.
