Winter shears can overcome pear tree size

On the basis of ensuring enough high-quality flower buds for this year's harvest, the tree should be pruned by removing inferior shoots and weak branches that have limited fruiting potential. At the base of the perennial branches, latent buds (about 1 cm in length) can be cut back, or one-third of the fruiting spurs can be removed. Under the condition of preserving as many flower buds as possible, the squid tree group must be shortened at the base of the fruiting branch or the perennial fruiting branch, except for the strongest ones. Each year, depending on the number of flower buds, the perennial branches should be pruned proportionally to maintain a balance between flowering and fruiting, ultimately achieving consistent yields year after year. Five years of observation show that pruning and shortening older branches encourages the growth of new shoots of varying lengths, which then form a certain percentage of flower buds during the same season. The older the short-stemmed branches are, the longer the new shoots tend to grow, but the lower the rate at which those new shoots develop into flower buds. This process helps maintain a healthy and productive tree structure over time, supporting long-term fruit production and quality. By carefully managing the pruning strategy each season, growers can ensure both immediate and future harvests remain abundant and of high quality.
