On the basis of preserving enough high-quality flower buds to ensure a good harvest this year, the trees in the Ninth Year and the Year of Peace should have their inferior shoots removed. Weak branches that lack the ability to bear fruit should be pruned back. At the base of the older branches, latent buds (about 1 cm long) should be cut short, or one-third of the fruiting spurs can be trimmed. Under the condition of keeping as many flower buds as possible, the squid tree group must be shortened at the base of the fruiting branch or the perennial fruit-bearing branch, except for the strongest ones. Each year, depending on the number of flower buds, the older branches should be pruned and shortened appropriately to maintain a balance between flowering and fruit production, ensuring consistent yields over time.
Five years of observation have shown that after pruning, the older branches can produce new shoots of varying lengths and develop a certain percentage of flower buds in the same season. In general, the longer the previous stem, the longer the new shoots will grow, but the lower the rate at which these new shoots will form flower buds. This method helps maintain a healthy, productive tree structure while promoting sustainable growth and fruiting over multiple seasons.
