Helps designers reach IEC 61508 SIL-3 safety standards more easily
Texas Instruments (TI) today introduced a new SafeTITM design package for safety-critical applications such as medical , industrial and energy motor control. These design packages include 15 new Hercules RM4x ARM Cortex-R4 safety microcontrollers and TI's companion TPS65381-Q1 multi-rail power supply (PMIC). The Hercules RM4x microcontroller and PMIC "Security Chipset" maximizes fault detection and mitigation while minimizing software overhead. Microcontrollers and PMICs are included with the SafeTI-61508 design package to help customers more easily qualify for the IEC 61508 standard and speed time-to-market for safety-critical products.
The introduction of these Hercules RM4x safety microcontrollers has further expanded the Hercules microcontroller portfolio, allowing customers to choose from 35 configurations to meet their specific application requirements. The new Hercules RM46x floating-point safety microcontroller offers more memory and performance configurations with expanded motor control and is compatible with last year's Hercules RM48x safety microcontroller pins. The new Hercules RM42x safety microcontroller offers an entry-level solution with a smaller package, lower cost and integrated motor control interface, while meeting safety standards. The compatible PMIC combines multiple power and safety features, such as voltage monitoring, into a single device to reduce design time and board space.
Features and benefits of the new Hercules RM4x secure microcontroller:
• Extends performance and memory options from 100 MHz to 220 MHz Lockstep ARM Cortex-R4 core and 384KB, 1MB and 1.25MB of flash memory, giving designers more choice and scalability for their versatile security products Sex.
· By using these safety microcontrollers to align components to industry safety standards, the IEC 61508 SIL-3 standard can be more easily achieved in system design.
Hardware security features provide a high level of online diagnostics with lockstep cores; memory protection for CPU and bus masters; flash and RAM for unit error correction and double bit error correction (SECDED) Error Correction Code (ECC); built-in self-test (BIST) function for CPU and RAM to detect potential delay faults; intelligent error signal transmission module that can take appropriate measures based on security errors; parity of peripheral RAM; Alternate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and timers; and continuous voltage and clock monitoring.
Integrated motor control with on-chip enhanced pulse width modulation, sensor capture and quadrature encoder interface to remove multiple external components for motor control. The 32-channel timer coprocessor acts as a redundant motor control channel of a different nature and checks the integrity of the pulse width modulator (PWM) in the motor control loop.
On- chip Ethernet, CAN, and USB connectivity enable networking and offer a variety of options for data collection and field software upgrades.
