First, disinfection before storage
After threshing, hybrid corn seeds should be cleaned and dried to prevent mold during storage. To ensure a safe environment, it's recommended to spray the inside and outside of the empty warehouse, including walls and floors, with 50% sulfuric acid or 80% dichlorvos diluted at a ratio of 1:1500. Before placing new hybrid corn into storage containers, these containers should also be sterilized to eliminate any pests that might have overwintered in cracks or crevices around the storage area.
Second, the construction and sealing of the container
1. Building a grain storage warehouse. Based on family economic conditions and the quantity of hybrid corn to be stored, construct a circular or square warehouse using bricks and cement in a location that is easy to keep dry. This helps isolate the corn from other food items, preventing mold, insects, and rodent infestations.
2. Making enclosures for grain storage containers. Cut a 0.35 mm thick sheet metal plate into two pieces measuring 100 cm and 200 cm. Drill seven holes at a joint width of 4 cm, then fasten the pieces together with screws to form a metal container. Alternatively, use two fiberboards of similar size to create a fiberboard enclosure. Once made, seal the joints with wide clear tape or paper paste. Place a 0.8 mm plastic film at the bottom of the container, then fill it with hybrid corn. Cover the base with a mixture of fresh cow dung or stove ash to seal the edges, about 10 cm high, and then proceed with fumigation.
3. Upgrading old storage containers. For non-standard containers like old bamboo fences or wooden cabinets, you can apply tape or paper as described above, or level the surface with fresh cow dung and stove mortar, let it dry, and then line the inside with a layer of plastic film or two layers of paper for added protection.
Third, the use of agents
1. Aluminum phosphide tablet fumigation method. Wrap aluminum phosphide tablets in a cloth bag measuring 10 cm in length. Place them in three layers within a wooden container, and loosely distribute 6-8 portions per 1,000 kg of hybrid corn. Insert one tablet into a container filled with corn, keeping it about 10 cm away from the sides. Seal the container tightly with 0.8 mm plastic film for effective fumigation.
2. Phosphoric acid fumigation method. Place the hybrid corn 10 cm away from the container’s mouth. Use three large bottles, mix 2 grams of garlic and 8 ml of sour vinegar with 1,000 kg of corn, then pour the mixture into the bottles and insert them into the grain. Position them in a triangular pattern 10 cm from the container wall, add zinc phosphide, and quickly cover with 0.8 mm plastic film to ensure a tight seal.
3. Phosphorus preservation method. Mix 400 kg of phosphorus with every 1,000 kg of hybrid corn, or fill each layer of corn with 30 cm (300 kg) of phosphorus (100 grams) to ensure full coverage.
4. Insecticidal phosphorus carrier method. For every 1,000 kg of hybrid corn, mix 30 grams of insecticidal phosphorus active ingredient, or 43% of 70% insecticide phosphorus preparation, with 1 liter of water and 1 kg of rice bran or sawdust to make a drug carrier. Then mix this evenly with the hybrid corn for effective pest control.
5. Dichlorvos smoke method. Soak old cotton wool in 50 grams of 80% dichlorvos, place it at the bottom of a container covered with plastic film, lay a mat or straw sheet on top, fill with 500-800 kg of hybrid corn, and seal tightly with 0.8 mm plastic film to kill pests.
6. Phoxim toxicity method. Mix 2 grams of 50% phoxim with 100 grams of rice bran and 0.5 kilograms of toads, then combine this with 100 kg of hybrid corn for effective pest management.
