Afterward, remove the seeds and immediately transfer them to cold water, continuing to stir to cool them evenly. This process helps break seed dormancy and improves germination.
2. Boiling water treatment: For seeds with thick seed coats, such as those from melon varieties, place them in a gauze bag and submerge them in water heated to 85°C to 100°C. Stir gently to ensure even exposure. Once removed, rinse immediately with cold water. Repeat this process 3 to 4 times. This method is particularly effective for tough-coated seeds, helping to soften the coat and promote germination.
3. White wine soaking: Use a ratio of 2 parts white wine, 1 part water, and 1 part seeds. Mix the white wine and water first, then soak the seeds in the solution for 10 minutes. Afterward, drain and proceed with germination. This technique has been shown to significantly enhance both the germination rate and the overall germination potential of the seeds.
4. Potassium permanganate soaking: For medicinal herb seeds, start by soaking them in warm water at 50°C for 20 to 25 minutes. Then, transfer them to a 1% potassium permanganate solution and let them sit for 15 minutes. Finally, rinse thoroughly with clean water to eliminate pathogens like blight, anthracnose, and other fungal diseases.
5. Formalin soaking: Soak medicinal herb seeds in warm water at 30°C for 4 to 6 hours. Then immerse them in a 1% formalin solution for 15 to 20 minutes. Afterward, place the seeds in a container lined with a damp cloth, seal it, and leave it for 2 to 3 hours. Finally, rinse with clean water. This method effectively prevents diseases such as blight, anthrax, and brown smut.
6. Powder coating: Choose from various seed coatings such as powdered fungicides, carbendazim, thiram, or seed dressing spirit. The powder should be used at a rate of 0.3% to 0.5% of the seed weight. Soak the seeds in warm water for 4 to 6 hours before applying the powder and mixing thoroughly.
7. Bleaching powder slurry: Prepare a slurry using 2% bleaching powder relative to the seed weight. Mix the powder with the seeds until well coated. Place the mixture in a sealed container and let it sit for 15 to 20 hours. This method is especially useful for eliminating black rot fungus on seeds of Radix isatidis and gentian.
8. Seed coating: Apply a seed coating agent containing bactericidal compounds to protect against various diseases in medicinal plants. This technique is currently considered the most effective method for pre-sowing disinfection and also aids in disease prevention and pest control after sowing. It ensures healthier seedlings and better crop performance.
