Winter sheep four attention

In winter, the availability of natural forage for goats is limited, and the nutritional value of dried leaves is very low. If goats don't eat enough or properly during the cold season, they can become weak and even fall ill. Therefore, it's crucial to ensure a sufficient supply of high-quality forage to support the goats through the winter. In addition, supplementing their diet with concentrated feeds can significantly improve their overall health and energy levels. Before the onset of winter, it's important to sort the flock into groups. This includes culling older or weaker animals and grouping sheep based on their health and nutritional needs. Many ewes give birth during the winter, so it's essential to move them to a separate lambing area before they deliver. After the lambs are born, they should be separated from the main herd and managed individually to prevent them from wandering too far. Assigning dedicated personnel to care for the lambs ensures better monitoring and protection. Once the ewes have given birth, they should not be kept in the same enclosure as adult sheep to avoid stress and potential disease transmission. To keep the animals warm, it's necessary to inspect and repair the pens before winter. Ensure that there are no gaps allowing cold air, rain, or snow to enter, and maintain a dry and warm environment inside the pens. When a cold snap occurs, increase the bedding to provide extra insulation. However, avoid using heating devices inside the pens, as this can lead to respiratory issues such as pneumonia due to smoke exposure. Maintaining cleanliness and preventing diseases is also critical during winter. Regularly check the pens, bedding, water sources, and feed to ensure they remain clean and free from contamination. Disinfection may be necessary if an outbreak is suspected. Sheep owners should also learn how to recognize and treat common illnesses. For example, in early winter, sheep may suffer from lice infestations. To treat this, mix rapeseed oil and kerosene and apply it to the affected areas 3–5 times daily for 3–4 days. Alternatively, a mixture of 100 grams of raw lard and 150 grams of ginger can be prepared and rubbed onto the affected areas once or twice daily to help eliminate the parasites. Proactive care and attention are key to keeping the flock healthy throughout the winter months.
