Melon nursery shed multi-layer film covered with drawbacks

In recent years, during the winter and spring seasons, many melon farmers build seedling nurseries, but most of them use simple greenhouse structures that are not well insulated. These basic sheds often lack proper thermal protection, leading farmers to cover them with multiple layers of plastic film in an attempt to improve insulation. In some cases, as many as five or six layers of film are used. While this does enhance heat retention, it significantly reduces light transmission and ventilation, which can negatively affect the growth of melon seedlings. Some farmers even use old, worn-out films to save costs, further reducing light penetration inside the shed. As a result, the environment inside becomes too cold, dim, and humid, making the seedlings weak and prone to diseases. This raises an important question: how can these issues be effectively addressed? The author proposes the following solutions: To ensure both good insulation and adequate light transmission, melon seedling greenhouses should not be built using traditional arch-shaped sheds. Instead, they should be constructed in winter-warm greenhouses or specially designed small-scale warm nurseries. These structures offer better insulation and allow for fewer layers of film, improving light transmission and enabling better ventilation without compromising temperature control. However, if building in an arch-shaped shed is unavoidable due to resource or space constraints, several measures must be taken. First, only new, high-quality films should be used to cover the nursery. The number of film layers should not exceed three to maintain sufficient light and airflow. If additional heating is needed, electric heaters, bulbs, or warm water bags can be employed to raise temperatures when necessary. When conditions allow, it's also important to increase ventilation and dehumidification to reduce humidity levels inside the shed. Additionally, the plastic films should be cleaned regularly to maximize light transmittance, supporting better photosynthesis and healthier plant growth. By implementing these strategies, farmers can create a more favorable environment for melon seedlings, reducing disease risks and improving overall yield.
