Sweet potato is used as feed

Sweet Potato as Animal Feed

After the harvest of sweet potatoes, the leftover parts, such as the small or damaged ones, are often left in the fields and not used. In the following spring, they are usually burned, which is an outdated and environmentally harmful practice. Fortunately, there's now a new solution: turning these unused sweet potato scraps into high-quality animal feed through fermentation. This method not only reduces waste but also improves the efficiency of farming and benefits both the environment and livestock.

The fermented feed has a pleasant aroma, with a slightly sour, sweet, soft, and fragrant taste, even a hint of wine. This makes it highly palatable for pigs, cows, sheep, poultry, and fish. Animals tend to eat more of it, leading to improved growth rates and increased profits by up to 20%.

The process is simple and effective. First, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt or impurities. Then chop them into small pieces or blend them into a slurry. Add a suitable amount of a microbial starter, such as Gold Baby Feed Starter, and mix well. Pack the mixture tightly into a container, pressing it down as much as possible to ensure good contact between the ingredients. Cover it with a plastic film to create an anaerobic environment.

In the initial stages of fermentation, it's important to keep the feed loose or open the plastic film slightly to allow air to circulate, helping beneficial microorganisms grow faster. Once the temperature rises to around 45°C, seal the container completely and stop heating to switch to anaerobic fermentation. The entire process usually takes about one day, after which the feed is ready to use.

This innovative approach not only maximizes the value of sweet potato leftovers but also offers a sustainable and economical feeding option for farmers. It’s a win-win for both agriculture and the environment.
