Sandy Beach

Beaches with sandy soil have excellent aeration and rapid nutrient decomposition, which supports a well-developed root system. However, the soil is often shallow, leading to poor water retention and unstable supply of both water and nutrients, which can result in weak tree growth. When large amounts of fertilizer are applied, the well-developed roots and good aeration can lead to short-term vigorous growth. For example, after autumn, heavy rainfall can trigger new shoots and lush growth. But because of the high root density, the available nutrients are quickly depleted, leading to leaching and loss. This often results in premature leaf fall once the rainy season ends. In addition, alluvial plains and sandy beaches commonly face issues like a compacted layer and high groundwater levels. To improve these conditions, it's essential to add large quantities of organic matter and clay to enhance water and nutrient retention. It's also important to break up the compacted layer, lower the groundwater level, and plant grass under trenches to help improve soil structure.

Mountainous Land

Soil on mountainous land tends to be thin and has good aeration, but it suffers from severe drought, soil erosion, and poor water and nutrient retention. Trees often grow slowly due to insufficient water and nutrients, resulting in small, yellow, and brittle leaves, which reduces fruit production. Deficiencies such as zinc and boron are common. To address this, a significant amount of organic fertilizer should be added to improve soil fertility and its ability to retain moisture and nutrients. Before planting, soil and water conservation measures like terracing should be implemented. Deep plowing and soil thickening can help correct nutrient deficiencies, allowing fruit tree roots to grow deeper and enhancing their drought resistance and nutrient absorption capacity.

Saline Soil

Sweet cherries have specific pH requirements, with the ideal range being between 6.0 and 7.5. If the soil pH exceeds 7.8, soil improvement is necessary. Coastal areas are generally favorable for sweet cherry growth, but the soil often contains varying levels of salt and alkali. One effective method of improvement is to dig trenches before planting and fill them with 20–30 cm of crop stalks, creating a buffer zone that prevents salt from rising to the surface. Adding large amounts of organic fertilizer can help reduce soil pH. Applying potassium sulfate instead of potash fertilizer and using ammonium sulfate for nitrogen can block capillary action, reducing evaporation and salt accumulation in the topsoil. Using ground cover, mulching, and planting green manure crops can also significantly improve saline soils.

Limestone Foothills, Alluvial Plains, Clay Soil

These soils have good water and nutrient retention but suffer from poor permeability, limited root development, and low density. This can cause waterlogging during the rainy season and early leaf drop in the middle and lower parts of the tree. Before planting, it's recommended to apply organic fertilizer deeply and mix in sand or gravel to improve soil aeration. Proper drainage ditches should also be created to prevent water accumulation and promote healthy root growth.
