Sweet Potato as Animal Feed
After the harvest of sweet potatoes, the leftover scraps and damaged pieces are often left in the fields. These are typically discarded or burned during the spring, which is not only wasteful but also harmful to the environment. Traditional methods like this are outdated and environmentally damaging. However, with modern technology, there's now a new solution: turning these unused sweet potato scraps into high-quality, nutritious animal feed. This process not only reduces waste but also brings significant economic benefits to farmers.
The fermented feed has a unique flavor—slightly sour, sweet, soft, and fragrant, with a hint of wine-like aroma. This makes it highly palatable for pigs, cows, sheep, poultry, and even fish. Animals tend to eat more of it, which can increase their growth rates by up to 15% to 20%, ultimately boosting breeding income.
The fermentation process is simple yet effective. First, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly to remove dirt and impurities. Then chop them into small pieces or blend them into a slurry. Add an appropriate amount of "Gold Baby" feed starter, mix well, and pack the mixture tightly into a container. The tighter the packing, the better the results. Cover the container with plastic film to create an airtight seal.
It’s important to note that during the initial stages of fermentation, you should open the plastic film or loosen the feed slightly to allow air to circulate. This helps beneficial microorganisms multiply faster. Once the temperature rises to around 45°C, it's time to seal the container again, stop heating, and let the fermentation continue under anaerobic conditions. This process usually takes about one day before the feed is ready for use.
By using this method, farmers can turn what was once considered waste into a valuable resource. Not only does it improve feed efficiency, but it also promotes sustainable farming practices. It's a win-win solution for both the environment and the economy.
