Three Elements of Ostrich Breeding

The ostriches are ostriches with strong breeding ability. However, species of ostrich must be selected and reared in groups before the age of 30 months. Male and female breeding birds are selected in a ratio of 1:2. Males require magnificent, dark-brown hair, red mouth, red feet, and strong sexual function. Females require significant female characteristics and good maternity.

Ostrich breeding habits

Female ostriches are generally sexually mature at the age of 2 to 2.5 years old and begin to nest, nesting in ground pits. The fertilization rate of eggs produced in the first year is above 50%.

Males are sexually mature at the age of three. Although they can mate and have low reproductive capacity, males are 1 year older than females, that is, they are the best fit at the age of 3 to 4 years old. Otherwise, the eggs produced during the first laying period are mostly infertile. Hatching is alternated between male and female ostriches. Female ostriches usually hatch their eggs during the day and male ostriches hatch their eggs at night.

Egg selection

The quality of eggs is the key to determining the hatching rate of ostriches. Therefore, we must pay attention to the selection and treatment of eggs. Eggs require clean, moderate size, good egg shape, and normal color. Therefore, eggs laid by ostriches should be carefully picked up and placed in a sterilized egg basket before selection.

1. To clean. Clean the sand on the eggs with a clean towel or brush, or rinse with sterile water.

2. Weighing eggs. Eggs are generally required to be 1.5 kg. It is very difficult for hatching eggs to grow more than 2 kg and less than 1 kg.

3. Look at the egg shape. The appearance of a qualified egg is oval, with one head slightly larger and the other head slightly smaller. Too long, round, flat and misshapen eggs have low hatchability.

The process of hatching

It is very uneconomical for ostriches to be reared by hand. Therefore, artificial hatching is usually used, ie hatching using hatchers. At present, most of the incubators used in China are controlled by computers, such as temperature control, humidity control, turning eggs, ventilation, and alarms. The control accuracy is high and the performance is reliable.

Freshly hatched chicks should be promptly wiped with iodine to wipe the umbilicus. At this time, the edema of the head, neck, legs, and feet of the bird is generally obvious. It is necessary to stay in the hatching machine until the edema disappears before it can be sent to the brooding room. At this time, small amounts of sugar, salt, and electrolytes can be artificially fed to increase the survival rate of the chicks.
