STMicroelectronics Introduces World's First Low-Power Three-Axis Accelerometer H3LIS331DL

STMicroelectronics (ST; New York Stock Exchange: STM) introduces the world's first motion sensor capable of detecting three axes of ultra-high acceleration and low power consumption. Vehicle driving recorders (commonly known as black box), medical monitoring equipment, and sports equipment have strict limits on space and power consumption, and require inspection components to accurately detect impact accelerations of up to 400g. ST's H3LIS331DL motion sensor is designed for these market needs.

Most applications do not need to detect high g impact acceleration. Most of the existing high-g impact detection solutions are based on single- or dual-axis high-power airbag sensors, while ST's accelerometers are battery-optimized motion sensors that combine high-precision 3D acceleration detection. And the two advantages of ultra low power consumption.

After reducing power consumption and increasing accuracy, high-impact detection devices will open up new opportunities for portable medical instruments and sports equipment that detects concussion in high-impact sports such as hockey, American football and racing. ST's high-g sensor can also significantly improve the impact detection performance of automotive driving recorders (black box) and cargo monitoring systems, and enhance the anti-collision function of consumer electronics.

ST's high-g accelerometers feature three-axis motion detection, allowing users to set a full-scale range from ±100g to ±400g with excellent time and temperature stability. The on-chip interface converts the acceleration data into a 12-bit code stream that is safely and reliably transferred to a dedicated microcontroller via standard SPI or I2C communication protocols.

The H3LIS331DL features a new inductive design that follows the low-power interface of ST's market-proven LIS331DLx accelerometer. The LIS331DLx has now shipped hundreds of millions of pieces.

STMicroelectronics' high-g accelerometer samples are available now, with volume production expected at the end of the second quarter of 2012.
