The Ten Best FREE iPad/iPhone Apps for Kids

I recently posted a short video clip on Twitter where I reflected on how much technology has changed since I was a kid. Back then, my dad's car phone was the size of a football, and my cassette player was pink and clunky. Now, my own kids are growing up surrounded by sleek devices that do so much more than those old gadgets ever could. Case in point: my daughter once picked up a non-touchscreen phone and declared it "broken" after failing to operate it like her iPad. As a mom, I’m always on the lookout for ways to keep my little ones entertained—especially during those high-pressure moments at the grocery store checkout line. Trust me, attempting to explain why they can’t touch everything within arm's reach is not recommended! That’s why I thought it would be fun to share some of our family’s favorite free iPad (and iPhone) apps for young kids. Maybe they’ll bring you a few minutes of peace too. First up is Disney’s Toy Story Read Along App. It’s absolutely delightful and packed with interactivity. We even recorded our own voices for some of the pages! You can follow along with the story, watch clips from the movie, color pictures, listen to the soundtrack, and play games. It’s perfect for fans of Woody and Buzz! (Available for iPad.) Next is Talking Tom. This app never fails to make us laugh, and it holds everyone’s attention for ages. Speak into your device, and Tom mimics your words in a hilariously funny voice. Pet him, tickle him, or even record and share your sessions with friends. It’s simple yet endlessly entertaining. (For iPad users.) If your kids love music, Virtuoso Piano Free is a fantastic choice. Both of mine enjoy pretending to be concert pianists on this app. You can switch between solo mode or dueling pianos for double the fun. Just be prepared for a symphony of sound coming from their tiny fingers! Available on iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches. Doodle Buddy is another hit in our house. Think of it as a digital sketchpad filled with endless possibilities. Choose from various backgrounds, stamps, brushes, chalk, and even glitter pens. It’s great for sparking creativity while keeping things mess-free. (Also available on iPhones and iPod touches.) Glow Stick is mesmerizing for younger children. Slide your finger across the screen to “break” the glow sticks, then shake the device to see them light up. My daughter is still amazed by all the vibrant colors and patterns, even though she’s seen them countless times. (For iPad and iPhone users.) For the fashion-forward kiddo, Make Me a Princess (Lite) offers hours of fun. Dress up a virtual princess by selecting hairstyles, outfits, accessories, and backgrounds. It’s endlessly customizable and perfect for role-playing enthusiasts. (Compatible with iPads and iPhones.) Toddler Teaser Shapes is educational without being boring. Kids learn about shapes while earning stickers as rewards. These can be saved to your photo album, making it a win-win for parents and kids alike. (Available on iPads and iPhones.) Timmy’s Preschool Adventure (Lite) combines learning with play. Help Timmy navigate challenges involving numbers, shapes, and patterns while collecting stickers along the way. It’s both engaging and informative. (Works on iPads and iPhones.) Matching Zoo is a charming matching game featuring cute animals and fun sound effects. My daughter adores playing—and winning! It also helps improve memory skills. (Accessible on iPads and iPhones.) Finally, Bubble Free lets kids pop virtual bubble wrap to their heart’s content. There’s also a similar app called Bubbles that used to be free but now has a small fee. Either way, it’s satisfying for both kids and adults alike. (For iPads and iPhones.) What are your go-to apps for keeping kids entertained? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to discover something new. Until next time, happy parenting and happy exploring!
