In summer, mushroom bags are commonly used for cultivating *Pleurotus ostreatus*. However, a common problem that growers face is the sudden death of many small mushrooms after they start to emerge. This issue can be attributed to three primary factors.
First, excessively high temperatures can be fatal. Once the primordia (young mushroom buds) have formed, if the temperature remains above 30°C for an extended period, the mycelium may begin to wither, leading to widespread mushroom death. Second, improper humidity levels—either too high or too low—can also cause significant damage. If the relative humidity in the growing area drops below 80%, the young mushrooms may suffer from dehydration and eventually wither away. On the other hand, excessive moisture during the fruiting stage can lead to waterlogging, yellowing, and even bacterial infections, which can kill the mushrooms. Third, poor ventilation is another major concern. When carbon dioxide levels exceed 0.5%, it can result in malformed mushrooms, such as those that are small, thick, or tightly closed, significantly reducing yield and quality.
To prevent these issues during summer cultivation, it's crucial to carefully manage temperature and humidity. If the temperature becomes too high, using well water to spray the walls and floor of the growing area can help cool the environment. At the same time, ensuring good air circulation by opening windows or using fans is essential. During hot weather, extra attention should be paid to maintaining proper conditions. When spraying water, avoid directly misting the mushrooms themselves. Instead, focus on the ground and surrounding walls to maintain a humid but not overly wet environment. The ideal relative humidity should be kept around 90%. After the mushrooms start to form, it’s recommended to spray water 4 to 5 times daily, using a fine mist and applying it evenly. This approach helps maintain optimal conditions for healthy growth and reduces the risk of disease and failure.
