Harvesting and Processing Technology of Astragalus

1. Seed Harvesting Seed fields are typically harvested when the plants are 23 years old. The seeds usually mature between August and September, and they are collected in batches during different stages to minimize natural seed loss. This method ensures that the seeds are collected at their optimal maturity while reducing waste. 2. Commodity Harvesting 1. Harvesting Period: The peak growth period for cultivated Astragalus membranaceus is at three years of age, and its active ingredient content reaches the highest level in September. Therefore, it is recommended to plan a three-year cultivation cycle, with harvesting starting in mid-to-late September to ensure maximum quality. 2. Harvesting Method: Both mechanical and manual methods can be used depending on the scale of production. When manually harvesting, it's important to dig deeply and carefully clean the roots, removing any remaining stems and dirt. After cleaning, the roots are transported to the drying area, where they are protected from rain and moisture. Once the roots are about 90% dry, a roller-type crusher is used to gently remove the outer skin. The machine runs at 21–24 revolutions per minute for approximately 15 minutes, effectively peeling off the bark without damaging the root. After this process, the roots are dried further until fully ready for market. Market Prospects Huangqi (Astragalus membranaceus) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, and its demand is steadily increasing due to growing awareness of its health benefits. Beyond traditional formulas, it serves as a key raw material for various proprietary medicines and is widely exported. The export of products like Shuanghuanglian powder and oral liquid, which contain Huangqi as a main component, is rising rapidly, opening up promising opportunities in the international market. As a result, the demand for high-quality raw materials is expected to grow continuously. There is significant potential for the artificial cultivation of Huangqi, and with proper development, its future prospects will continue to improve.
