Since last winter, the region experienced prolonged cold temperatures and significant snowfall, followed by a rapid temperature rise. This has led to high humidity and increased soil moisture, creating favorable conditions for various pests and diseases. As a result, it is crucial to pay close attention to the occurrence and potential damage caused by these pests this year. Proactive measures must be taken to ensure effective prevention and control.
Based on the early spring pest patterns observed in the area, the following management strategies are recommended:
1. Clear fallen leaves from orchards and remove old bark from trees, especially where apple rot or other fungal diseases are present. Burn the infected material to reduce disease sources. During pruning, cut off branches affected by powdery mildew, galls, or other pests. Also, trim the edges of cypress trees to eliminate rust spores. These practices help minimize overwintering pests such as apple scab, apple rust, apple canker, early leaf fall, pear psylla, leaf miners, tortrix moths, and mites.
2. For apple, pear, peach, and cherry orchards, apply 3–5° Baumé lime sulfur solution. The timing depends on the species: apples and pears should be sprayed during bud swelling, peaches when buds begin to show a slight red color, and cherries during the bud stage.
3. For apple canker, after scraping off the diseased areas, apply a fungicide such as Kangshui agent, Rot Rule, or Fruit Rot Kang. In older orchards with severe canker issues, consider spraying the entire orchard with products like Parkinson’s Net, Guokangbao, or Fruit Fungus Net.
4. In orchards infested with scale insects, spray a 5% oil-based diesel or mineral oil emulsion before bud break, depending on the growth stage of each tree species. Spraying too late may cause plant injury.
5. For orchards affected by the small apple fruit worm, apply a 50-fold mixture of dichlorvos and kerosene directly at the site of infestation to kill the larvae.
These steps will help reduce the risk of pest outbreaks and protect the health of your orchards throughout the growing season. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential for long-term success.
