Yellow clam cage breeding bait selection

Cage aquaculture has become a popular and widely adopted technology across many regions in China. However, despite its growing use, many feeding techniques are still in the experimental phase, and farmers often face challenges in choosing the most suitable feed. Below are some of the commonly used feeding methods that have been developed and applied in practice. Feeding with Main Bait 1. Feeding live small fish: This method is commonly practiced in small-scale fish ponds, where live trash fish or small fish are used as bait. The feeding amount is generally 5-6% of the body weight of the fish, and no prior conditioning is required. 2. Feeding fresh or frozen dead fish: This approach is more suitable for large-scale farming operations. There are two main ways to prepare the feed: either chopping the dead fish into pieces and feeding directly, or grinding it into a slurry. The recommended feeding rate is around 5-6% of the fish’s body weight. 3. Feeding compound feed: This method requires initial conditioning of the fish. After stocking, feed should be withheld for three days to allow the fish to adapt to their new environment. Once they are acclimated, feeding can begin in the evening. It's best to start with small fish like yellow quail or river fleas, mixed with artificial feed. The ratio of compound feed to fresh bait should be about 500-1000 grams of compound feed per 500 grams of fresh bait. Feed twice daily, ideally between 6-7 AM and 5-6 PM. Initially, the feeding amount should be 2-3% of the fish’s weight, gradually increasing to 4-5%. Compound feed comes in two forms: powder and extruded pellets. For powdered feed, mix it with fresh bait using a meat grinder to form a paste-like bait, then dry it before feeding. Extruded pellets should be mixed with fresh bait and left to sit for 30 minutes to soften before being fed. 4. Feeding alternative feeds: This includes items such as quail, river shrimp, animal by-products, wheat bran, and duckweed. These can serve as supplementary food sources when primary feed is not available. 5. Proper handling of feed: Small fish should be rinsed with clean water before feeding. Larger fish should be boiled first. Leeches should be frozen and thawed before being used as bait. Pellets should be softened before being given to the fish.
