Five measures against spring flowers "scattered flowers"

"Spring cauliflower 'scattered flower' occurs when the cauliflower is in the bulb enlargement stage, and the stem elongates early. However, the degree of elongation varies, causing the flower head to spread outwards rather than remaining compact. This results in a loose, unformed head without a central growth point. Some flower buds develop a purple-green velvet-like appearance after elongation, and the buds begin to form secondary buds. The overall structure resembles a chicken's claw, which significantly reduces both the market value and quality of the produce, as well as the yield. Therefore, it is crucial to take proactive measures to prevent this issue. The main preventive strategies include: First, choose high-hybridization varieties to avoid the "return to ancestors" phenomenon caused by improper selection of cauliflower types. Second, in actual farming, select early, mid, and late-maturing varieties based on specific cultivation needs. Adjust the harvest time according to each variety’s growth period—early varieties typically mature in 70 days, mid-season in 80–90 days, and late varieties in 100–120 days. Third, during the seedling stage, ensure proper cold protection. Use plastic covers or other methods, especially in northern regions, to maintain a temperature between 17°C and 20°C, avoiding temperatures below 8°C. Harvest late cauliflower promptly to prevent high temperatures from triggering premature flowering and reproductive growth. Fourth, use nutrient-rich seedling solutions or seedling bags, and provide sufficient space for each plant to develop strong, healthy seedlings. A healthy seedling should have 6–8 true leaves, a compact root system, short internodes, dark green foliage, and a height of 15–18 cm. Only transplant those that meet these standards, as they will lead to higher-quality cauliflower with proper later management. Fifth, ensure adequate water and balanced fertilization. Apply 3,000–5,000 kg of well-decomposed organic fertilizer per acre as a base. During the seedling stage, apply micro-nutrients with a soil-to-fertilizer ratio of 1:1. After transplanting, add 50 kg of ammonium nitrate, 30 kg of potassium sulfate, and 5 kg of full-element fertilizer per acre. Water moderately, ensuring that the soil is moist but not waterlogged. After watering for 3–4 hours, the water should be fully absorbed without standing water." (Word count: 523)
