German scientists have developed scanners that detect under-skin tissue

Release date: 2017-06-07

According to foreign media reports, when doctors need to evaluate inflammatory skin disease - psoriasis, it is necessary to observe the red scales on the surface of the patient's skin. However, there is a certain limitation in this type of diagnosis, that is, the diagnosis needs to be based on the doctor's subjective consciousness. As a result, researchers from the Helmholtz Munich Center and the Technical University of Munich thought of developing a handheld scanner that could see the underside of the skin.

It is reported that this scanner does not produce any radiation effect on the human body. It uses a technique called RSOM, which only uses a weak laser pulse to detect the skin to achieve the purpose of heating the tissue. The skin tissue after heating can be temporarily expanded into the ultrasound. The scanner's sensors are able to detect these ultrasound waves and then analyze them to create a high-resolution image.

In the experiment, the researchers used RSOM to detect the skin thickness, capillary density, number of blood vessels, and total blood volume of the volunteers.

Vasilis Ntziachristos, director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging at the Helmholtz Center in Germany, said that the technology is not only simple to use, does not have any radiation effects, but it can also be detected in the first place.

In the future, this technology will likely be used in the detection of diseases such as skin cancer and diabetes.
