I was supposed to be working on my "Frozen Moments" post today—or maybe tackling the stack of other drafts waiting to see the light of day, like the upcoming Mama Style post for Valentine’s Day to pair with our recent Mini Style piece. But life has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn’t it? This past weekend, just as I was about to board a flight solo with my youngest (my littlest darling), I realized I’d caught some kind of bug from my middle child. Let’s just say it wasn’t pleasant.
I’ve been lucky enough to avoid getting sick like this in quite a while, so when all those germs were swirling around, I went into full-blown sanitization mode—again. I even double-checked every doorknob and light switch before leaving the house. It didn’t help much. By the time we boarded the plane, I was already feeling the effects.
Thankfully, Skylar slept most of the way, and I tried to follow suit, but it wasn’t easy. When I finally had a moment to breathe in Philly, I made another attempt at catching some shut-eye. Of course, my sweet little one had other plans—he kept waking up, wanting to snuggle or play. Those moments reminded me how much I love being close to him, even if it meant sacrificing precious rest.
The day before my trip, I spent the afternoon hanging out with my oldest son. He'd been sent home from school because he wasn’t feeling well, and I knew I’d be flying out that evening. Instead of worrying about everything else on my plate, we spent the day cuddled up together, watching movies and talking about life. He handed me his cold (or whatever it was) without hesitation, and honestly, it felt nice to connect like that. There’s something beautiful about those unplanned moments when you’re reminded of the bond between parent and child.
Fast forward to the next morning. I woke up early in my hotel room, exhausted but grateful for the quiet time to myself. My heart ached knowing my baby back home was probably missing me, trying to figure out why Mommy wasn’t there to kiss him goodnight. Even from afar, he found ways to let me know he cared—he sent pictures and videos, and I could hear the concern in his voice. It broke my heart and warmed it all at once.
Now that everyone’s finally on the mend, I’m slowly catching up on things here. Writing feels therapeutic after days of chaos, though I must admit, part of me wishes I could rewind time and spend more moments just soaking in their laughter.
When I get back home, there will be plenty of snuggles awaiting me—and no illnesses to spoil the fun. Until then, I’ll keep dreaming of the hugs I missed and savoring the ones I got along the way. Life isn’t always perfect, but it sure is full of beautiful imperfections worth holding onto.
