The main components of a cultivator are typically categorized into two types: shovel-type and rotary-type. Among these, the shovel-type is more commonly used and can be further divided into three categories: weeding shovels, loosening shovels, and earth-shaping shovels. Each type serves a specific purpose in soil preparation and crop maintenance.
First, weeding shovels are designed to remove weeds from between crop rows. They come in three forms: single-wing, winged, and ventilated. The single-wing shovel is ideal for early weed control, with a working depth usually not exceeding 6 cm. It consists of a horizontal blade and a vertical guard plate. The blade is used for breaking up loose soil, while the guard plate prevents soil compaction and has cutting edges at the bottom to avoid clogging from grasses. These shovels are placed on both sides of the seedlings, resulting in left and right versions that must be carefully installed. Winged weeding shovels function similarly but are often used in combination with single-wing models to enhance efficiency.
Next, loosening shovels are used to aerate the soil between crop rows without flipping it over. Their working depth can reach up to 13–16 cm. These shovels consist of a blade tip and a handle. The blade tip comes in three shapes: chisel, arrow, and birch. The chisel-shaped tip is narrow and flattens the soil during cultivation, ensuring even loosening. Though once common, this design is now less frequently used. The arrow-shaped tip features a triangular blade with a curved surface, which effectively breaks up the soil and leaves a smooth ditch bottom. This type is widely adopted in modern Chinese cultivators. The birch-shaped tip is suitable for initial tilling on ridges, with a similar shape to the arrow tip but with a longer wing extending backward.
Finally, earth-shaping shovels are used for cultivating and forming ridges. They can be either curved or flat. The curved type has arc-shaped blades and chests, offering strong crushing and turning capabilities. Its side walls are semi-circular, allowing soil to be broken and pushed to both sides. The blade is narrow, making it effective for weeding along ridges. The shovel blade and chest are hinged, and the opening of the side walls is controlled by a regulating wall, adjustable between 275–430 mm to suit various row spacings. This type is commonly used in northern dryland areas of China. The flat type is more suited for ridge farming in the northeast, primarily for barnyardgrass control and ridge formation when equipped with earth boards. During the first pass, a 200 mm wide birch plow is used instead of an earth board; for the second pass, a 250 mm zinc plow adjusts the board to the center; and for the third pass, a 350 mm triangular rake maximizes the earth board’s opening.
