In spring, rotary cultivators experience their highest sales and usage periods. Recently, the AQSIQ conducted a national quality supervision and spot check on rotary cultivator products. A total of 21 products from 21 companies across six provinces and municipalities—Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Shandong, Anhui, Henan, and Shanghai—were tested. Out of these, 16 passed the inspection, resulting in a sampling pass rate of 76.2%. The spot check revealed four major quality issues: first, inadequate safety protection; second, unqualified hardness of the rotary knife; third, poor appearance quality; and fourth, non-standard product labeling.
To help farmers make informed choices, experts from the Agricultural Machinery Quality Supervision Station provided guidance on selecting and using rotary cultivators.
**Key Points for Purchase**
- **Reasonable Matching**: The power consumption of the rotary cultivator should be lower than the output power of the tractor it is paired with. The working width should cover both sides of the tractor’s wheels. After three-point linkage, it should not affect the stress conditions of the front and rear wheels.
- **Safe and Reliable**: The rotating parts must have a secure safety guard. When placed alone, the machine should stand steadily without external support. It should also have clear warning signs and complete user manuals that include technical specs, safety instructions, assembly steps, maintenance tips, and troubleshooting guides.
- **Suitable for Local Conditions**: The tillage depth should meet crop growth requirements, generally not less than 10 cm.
- **Good After-sales Service**: The seller should offer maintenance and spare parts services. A “Three Guarantees†service card (repair, replacement, return) should be provided, and after-sales commitments must align with the relevant regulations.
- **Certified Products**: Preferably choose products with an agricultural machinery promotion permit and license certificate issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.
**Usage Tips**
Rotary cultivators operate at high speeds, so safety is crucial. Before use, check all components, especially the anti-reverse bolts and universal joint locking pins. Ensure the clutch is disengaged before starting the tractor. Engage the power only when the machine has reached the correct speed, and lower it slowly into the soil. Avoid sudden drops or reversing once in the field.
When turning, keep the power on but don’t lift the machine too high. Maintain a proper engine speed and avoid overloading the PTO shaft. Never approach the rotating parts while the machine is running, and always turn off the power before inspecting or replacing parts.
Farming speed should be around 2–3 km/h in dry fields and 5–7 km/h in plowed areas. In rice paddies, it can be faster, but avoid excessive speed to prevent damage. Keep the tractor wheels on uncultivated land to avoid compaction. Adjust the wheel spacing accordingly.
If the blades become clogged with grass, stop immediately and clean them. Avoid riding over the machine during operation. When using a walking tractor, ensure the sub-gear lever is in the "slow" position before hanging the cultivator. Reverse only after placing the lever in neutral. Use handrails to steer instead of the steering clutch, and avoid sharp turns to prevent damage.
According to Jing Zidi, director of the National Aquatic Machinery Quality Inspection Center, regular maintenance is key to safe and efficient operation. Maintenance is divided into class-based and quarterly checks. After each work session, check bolts, wear parts, and lubrication levels. Quarterly maintenance includes cleaning, oil changes, blade replacement, and checking for deformations. If the machine is not in use for a long time, it should be stored on level ground, not hung on a tractor.
