A typical pond size is about 3 mu (approximately 2,000 square meters), with a minimum water depth of 1.5 meters throughout the year. Puffer fish are usually raised individually. For each mu, it is recommended to stock more than 1,000 fry per mu, with each fry measuring around 3 cm. Stocking should begin when the water temperature exceeds 18°C. Before placing the fry into the pond, the fish bags should be soaked in the pond for a while to allow the water temperature inside the bag to match that of the pond. Only then should the fry be released. Third, feeding is a critical aspect of puffer fish farming. Currently, there is no specialized feed available for puffer fish, so a combination of cod feed, crustaceans, shellfish, and small fish is commonly used. To feed them, a feeding platform is set up near the pond. The carp feed is mixed with water, kneaded into dough, and placed on the platform. The feeding amount depends on the fish size: for those under 250 grams, feed should be 1% to 3% of their body weight, while for larger fish, it should be 3% to 8%. Feeding is done twice daily, between 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Fourth, disease management is essential. Common diseases affecting puffer fish include hydromycosis and enteritis. To treat hydromycosis, the drug Quanchiposa can be used. For enteritis, broad-spectrum antibiotics can be mixed into the feed for prevention and treatment. Regular monitoring and early intervention are key to maintaining healthy fish populations. By following these practices, farmers can effectively raise puffer fish in outdoor ponds, ensuring both productivity and sustainability.
