However, when temperatures drop below 18°C in autumn, they must be moved indoors to greenhouses for optimal growth. Pond Conditions The pond should be located in an area with clean water, abundant water supply, and convenient irrigation. It's also important to have shade around the pond to prevent overheating during summer, which could lead to fish mortality. The pond should cover about 3 mu (approximately 2,000 square meters), with a consistent water depth of at least 1.5 meters throughout the year. Before stocking puffer fish fry, the pond must be thoroughly disinfected to eliminate any silt and ensure there are no leaks. II. Stocking Density and Time Typically, single-species farming is used. The recommended stocking density is over 1,000 fry per mu, with each fry measuring about 3 cm. Fish can be stocked once the water temperature exceeds 18°C. When preparing to stock, the fish fry bags should first be soaked in the pond until the temperature inside the bag matches that of the pond water. Only then should the fry be released into the pond. III. Feeding Currently, there is no specially formulated feed for puffer fish. Instead, they are commonly fed with cod feed mixed with crustaceans, shellfish, and small fish. The feeding process involves setting up a feeding table near the pond. The carp feed is mixed with water, kneaded into a dough, and placed on the feeding table. The amount of feed depends on the size of the fish: for those under 250 grams, feed should be 1% to 3% of their body weight. For larger fish, the feed amount increases to 3% to 8% of their weight. Feeding is done twice daily—between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and again between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. IV. Disease Control So far, only two diseases have been observed in puffer fish: hydromycosis and enteritis. To treat hydromycosis, a drug called Quanchiposa can be used. For the prevention and treatment of enteritis, broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs can be mixed into the feed. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential to maintain healthy fish populations and ensure successful aquaculture.
