Rotary cultivator purchase and use

In spring, the demand for rotary cultivators reaches its peak as farmers prepare their fields for planting. Recently, the AQSIQ (Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) conducted a national spot check on the quality of these agricultural tools. A total of 21 products from 21 companies across six provinces and municipalities—Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Shandong, Anhui, Henan, and Shanghai—were tested. Out of them, 16 passed the inspection, resulting in a pass rate of 76.2%. However, the test revealed four major quality issues: inadequate safety protection, unqualified hardness of the rotating blades, poor product appearance, and non-compliant labeling. To help farmers make informed choices, experts from the Agricultural Machinery Quality Supervision Station have shared key guidelines on how to select and use a rotary cultivator properly. **Key Points for Purchase:** - **Proper Matching:** Ensure the power consumption of the rotary cultivator is lower than that of the tractor it's paired with. The working width should match the tractor’s wheelbase to avoid uneven stress on the front and rear wheels. - **Safety First:** The rotating parts must be equipped with sturdy guards. The machine should stand steadily on its own without external support. Safety warning signs and complete user manuals—including technical specs, safety instructions, assembly steps, and maintenance guides—are essential. - **Suitability for Local Conditions:** The cultivator should be able to till at least 10 cm deep to suit rice or other crops’ growth needs. - **After-Sales Support:** Choose a reliable seller offering maintenance services and spare parts. Ensure the product comes with a valid "Three Guarantees" service card, and verify that the after-sales commitment aligns with the national standards for agricultural machinery. - **Certifications Matter:** Prefer products that have obtained the agricultural machinery promotion permit and bear the corresponding license certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture. **Usage Tips:** - **Pre-Use Checks:** Inspect the blade bolts, universal joint locking pin, and all components before starting. Address any issues immediately. - **Clutch Position:** Always disengage the clutch before starting the tractor. - **Power Engagement:** Only engage the power when the cultivator has reached the proper speed. Avoid lowering it into the soil too quickly or reversing once it's in the ground. - **Speed Control:** In dry fields, maintain a speed of 2–3 km/h; in wet or plowed areas, increase to 5–7 km/h. Never exceed safe speeds to prevent damage to the PTO shaft. - **Avoid Overloading:** Keep the tractor wheels on uncultivated land to prevent soil compaction. Adjust the wheel spacing to stay within the cultivator’s working range. - **Safety During Operation:** Stay away from the rotating parts. Do not approach from behind, as debris could cause injury. - **Maintenance:** Turn off the engine before inspecting or replacing parts. Clean the machine regularly if it becomes clogged with grass or dirt. - **Operation Technique:** When using a walking tractor, only hang the cultivator in “slow” mode. Use the handrails to steer, not the steering clutch. Avoid sharp turns to protect the equipment. Experts emphasize that regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of rotary cultivators. Maintenance is divided into class-level checks after each task and quarterly inspections. Class-level tasks include checking bolts, worn parts, and lubrication levels. Quarterly checks involve cleaning, oil replacement, blade inspection, and overall equipment care. If not in use for long periods, the machine should be placed on level ground—not hung on a tractor—to prevent damage. By following these guidelines, farmers can ensure safer, more effective use of their rotary cultivators while extending the life of the equipment.
