The fungus, also known as Likui or Rattan, is a nutritious plant with tender stems and leaves that are commonly consumed. It thrives in warm weather and grows quickly, making it ideal for cultivation during the summer and autumn seasons. There are several popular varieties currently in use, including Red Fall Auspicious, Green Stalks Fall Acorn, Wide Leaf Fall Aoi, and White Flower Fall Acre. Depending on the part of the plant used, it can be categorized into two main types: shoot-picking varieties and leaf-harvesting scaffolding types.
Before planting, it is recommended to apply 2,500 kilograms of organic manure per acre along with 450 kilograms of superphosphate. To improve soil structure, deep plowing combined with eucalyptus and a soil conditioner (200 grams per acre) should be used to enhance soil looseness and drainage. The field should then be leveled properly. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in warm water at 35°C for 1–2 days. No germination is required when planting during the summer and autumn seasons. Sow approximately 8 kg of seeds per acre, which will result in about 30,000 healthy seedlings per acre.
After the seedlings emerge, they should be thinned out and spaced appropriately. The distance between plants should be 40–40 cm (or 30–40 cm), with 1–5 plants per hole. For shoot production, the shoots should be spaced 15–20 cm apart, with 1–3 plants per hole.
Once the plant has matured, it's important to maintain moist soil and water regularly. After each harvest, applying 500 kg of human fecal urine per hectare or 10 kg of urea is beneficial. During the rainy season, proper drainage must be ensured to avoid waterlogging.
When harvesting young shoots, collect them when the plant reaches a height of 30–35 cm, with 3–4 leaves. Select two strong lateral buds and remove the rest. After two shoots are harvested, leave 2–4 strong lateral shoots and remove the others. During the vigorous growth phase, up to 5–8 strong lateral buds can be retained. Throughout the mid and late stages, any weak buds should be removed promptly. At the end of the harvest season, leave 1–2 strong lateral buds to ensure continued growth.
For leaf harvesting, the main stems left behind become the vines. Strong lateral buds at the base are typically selected to form these vines. When the main vine reaches the top of the structure, it should be topped. After removing the heart, select strong lateral buds from the base of the main stem to encourage new growth.
About 40–50 days after sowing, the young leaves can be harvested. In the early growth stage, harvesting occurs every 15–20 days, while in the middle growth stage, it’s done every 10–15 days, and later every 10–17 days. When harvesting young shoots, cut them with a knife or scissors, keeping the length between 10–15 cm. Harvesting is usually done every 7–10 days. In the early and late stages, young shoots are harvested, while in the middle period, young leaves are collected.
Common diseases affecting this fungus include brown spot disease, also known as fish eye disease, red spot disease, snake eye disease, and sun spot. These can be controlled by spraying 600 times diluted Kexin wettable powder or 68.75% Yibao dispersible granules at a dilution of 1000 times during the early stages of infection. Regular monitoring and timely treatment are essential to prevent the spread of these diseases.
