"Rice grows like sorghum," a line from an elementary school textbook, is now becoming a reality in our city. Yesterday, the Rice Research Institute of Southwest University announced that they have successfully introduced sorghum genes into rice, creating a new variety of high-quality, high-yield transparent rice.
The breakthrough comes after a decade of research led by Professor He Guanghua and his team at the institute. On Thursday, experts from both inside and outside the city evaluated the results and unanimously agreed that the achievement has reached international standards.
According to Professor He, the team used advanced molecular techniques and centrifuges to extract genes from sorghum leaves. These genes were then inserted into rice pollen tubes or stems. As a result, the modified genes entered the rice ovary and developed into rice ears with larger grains—some even containing up to 250 grains per ear. When these seeds are planted again, the resulting rice shows strong drought resistance, inherited from sorghum.
The new transparent rice not only looks appealing but also tastes better when cooked. It has been officially recognized as second-class quality rice by the national authorities.
With over 3 million yuan invested in the project, this high-quality rice is now being widely promoted throughout the city. By next fall, residents of the main urban area will be able to enjoy it on their dinner tables. Over the past two years, the rice has shown stable quality, and its yield has significantly increased—reaching about 700 kilograms per mu, compared to the usual 600 kilograms. Although the price may be slightly higher than regular rice, consumers are expected to appreciate its superior quality and taste.
