First, site selection. Chicken farms should be located in sunny, sheltered valleys on the leeward side, where there are trees for shade and grass for grazing. A simple, well-ventilated chicken house should be built in a dry area, ensuring it stays warm in winter and cool in summer. This helps maintain a healthy environment for the chickens.
Second, feeding. Chicks should be raised at home for 30 to 45 days before being moved to the mountains, which can significantly increase their survival rate. Chickens are naturally active during the day, basking in the sun and foraging for food. Feed them half-full in the morning and midday to keep them eager for meals, and offer the final feed at dinner. The feeding trough should have a wide mouth that narrows at the bottom, with curled edges nailed inward to prevent chickens from pulling feed out or hooking it with their beaks. In the evening, especially during summer, hang a light about one meter above the coop from dusk until 10 p.m. to attract the chickens back. If there's no electricity, kerosene lamps can be used instead. Always provide clean, fresh drinking water.
Third, management. The coop must remain cool in summer and insulated in winter. Pay special attention to "cold spring" drafts, which can harm the chickens. At night, let the chickens return to the coop and keep a dog nearby to guard against wild animals. Every morning, remove the chicken droppings to maintain hygiene and reduce disease risk.
Fourth, disease prevention. Chicks should receive the Newcastle disease II vaccine via nasal drops starting on day seven of life—just one drop per nostril. After 60 days of raising, administer both the Newcastle disease and cholera vaccines, one milliliter per chicken, to protect against these common illnesses. To support immunity, mix half a cup of vinegar with boiled water, or dissolve one furazolidone tablet in 500 grams of boiled water, and let the chickens drink this solution daily. This helps maintain their health and reduces the chances of illness.
