Norwegian scientists develop "death time detector" accurate detection

Release date: 2007-08-01

Norwegian researchers have developed a groundbreaking tool known as the "Death Time Detector," offering forensic experts a more precise method for determining the time of death. According to reports from Norwegian media on July 28, Professor Kjetil Rognum from the University of Oslo created this innovative device, which is designed to improve the accuracy of postmortem time estimation.

Traditionally, forensic pathologists rely on factors such as body temperature and physical changes in the corpse to estimate when a person died. However, the new technology works by analyzing a specific substance found in the fluid inside the eye. This approach provides a more objective and reliable way to determine the time of death.

According to Rognum, the new device significantly reduces the margin of error compared to conventional methods. For cases where death occurred within four hours, traditional techniques can have an error range of about 1.5 hours, while the new instrument narrows this down to less than 30 minutes. This level of precision could be crucial in criminal investigations and legal proceedings.

In addition, the device is effective for up to four days after death, which is much longer than the typical detection window of existing methods. This extended timeframe gives investigators more flexibility and improves the chances of obtaining accurate results even in cases where the body has been discovered later.

The development marks a significant advancement in forensic science and could potentially change the way death times are determined worldwide. As reported by the Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association, this innovation highlights the ongoing efforts to refine and improve forensic methodologies through scientific research and technological progress.
