Freezing damage poses a serious threat to the healthy growth of tea plants. When frost damages the leaves, it not only reduces their quality but also affects the overall yield and value of the tea. In severe cases, the tea tree may even die due to heavy frost damage. Therefore, it is crucial to actively prevent freezing injury to ensure the tea trees survive the winter safely. These preventive measures will also help secure a bountiful harvest in the following year.
First, effective measures should be taken to prevent frost damage. One important method is to establish windbreaks by planting protective forests on the windward side of the tea plantation. This helps reduce wind speed and minimizes frost damage. Another technique is to mound soil around the base of the tea plants, about 5–10 centimeters high, during late autumn. This protects the roots from cold and can be removed in spring to improve soil aeration.
Covering the tea garden with grass, weeds, straw, or manure is another effective way to raise ground temperature and protect the tea plants from freezing. The covering should be applied before snowfall and removed in early March of the next year. Additionally, using smoke from burning dry grass or other materials on windless, clear nights can create a greenhouse-like effect, helping to retain heat and prevent frost.
Applying deep organic fertilization is also essential. It not only improves soil fertility but also increases the cold resistance of the tea plants, making them more resilient to low temperatures.
If the tea plants have already suffered from frost damage, timely recovery measures are necessary. Pruning damaged branches and leaves should be done in early spring after the temperature stabilizes. This helps the plant focus its energy on healthy growth. After pruning, proper watering and fertilization should be carried out. Light irrigation and the application of quick-acting fertilizer can stimulate new growth and support the recovery of the tea plants.
