Drought is a widespread challenge that affects human societies globally. Cultivating economic crops in arid regions not only helps improve the environment but also contributes significantly to national economic development. This project focuses on meeting the needs of fruit tree cultivation and development in dry areas. Through cluster analysis, we have identified several arid zones and determined suitable fruit tree varieties and rootstocks for each type of region. Additionally, water-saving techniques and supporting cultivation methods have been developed from multiple perspectives.
These techniques include the use of organic matter or mulch film to reduce evaporation, hole storage fertilization, precision fertilization, grass cover, anti-transpiration sprays, water retention agents, branch stimulation elements, dwarfing and energy-efficient pruning, as well as effective pest control measures. These innovations are highly valuable in enhancing both the yield and quality of fruit trees grown in dryland conditions.
Technical indicators show that the dryland demonstration garden has maintained a survival rate of over 95% since its establishment. Trees began flowering within three years and started producing fruit by the fourth year. The average annual yield per mu exceeds 600 kilograms. After transforming low-yield orchards in dryland areas, the annual output has increased by more than 30 to 50 percent. This project not only promotes sustainable agriculture but also provides practical solutions for farmers facing water scarcity. It demonstrates the potential of combining scientific research with traditional farming practices to create resilient and productive agricultural systems in challenging environments.
