Multi-layer bed cultivation technology of garlic

Cultivation of garlic using a bed frame system typically begins in January and continues through the end of February. This method is particularly effective for growing high-quality garlic with consistent yields. First, the location and materials for the bed need to be carefully chosen. The greenhouse is divided into three sections: the front and back have shorter beds that can accommodate two layers, while the middle section is taller and can support three layers. The spacing between each bed should be approximately 80 cm. The materials used include wood, straw, old plastic film, iron wire, and a small number of red bricks. Next, the construction of the bed involves several steps. The first layer is built 10 cm above the ground, with walls about 6–7 cm wide and 1.2–1.6 meters long. A wooden frame is then used to create a bed that is 1–3 meters wide (the length can vary). The distance between the wooden rods should be around 20–30 cm. After the frame is set up, an old plastic sheet is placed on top to help retain moisture, followed by a 6 cm layer of sandy loam soil. The second layer is built 80–100 cm above the first, using wooden poles to form a frame that is 1 meter wide. This frame is tied together and covered with a 6 cm layer of straw, followed by another layer of old plastic film and 6 cm of sandy loam soil. The third layer is constructed 60 cm above the second, with a wooden pole frame that is 80–90 cm wide. A 6 cm layer of straw is laid down, then an old plastic sheet, and finally a 6 cm layer of sandy loam soil, which is compacted to ensure stability. For cultivation management, it's important to choose large garlic varieties with big bulbs, multiple cloves, and short dormancy periods. These varieties tend to sprout quickly and produce higher yields. Before planting, garlic cloves are soaked in 20°C water for 30 hours to encourage swelling. After soaking, they are drained and the stem plate is removed. If planting on a large scale, the stem plate may not be removed, but two cuts are made instead. When planting, place 15 kg of garlic per square meter. Ensure the garlic is tightly packed, and fill any gaps with loose garlic. After covering the garlic, spread a 3 cm layer of fine sand and make sure the bed is evenly moist. Water the bed every three days to maintain proper humidity. Moisture management is crucial. When watering seedlings, use water that is at least 15°C, preferably 20°C, to avoid lowering the bed temperature. Watering should occur before growth begins, during the mid-growth phase (when plants reach 15–16 cm), and again just before harvest. Since garlic is exposed to air, water evaporates quickly, so the frequency of watering depends on the moisture level of the soil. Temperature control is also essential. Keep the greenhouse cover clean to maximize light penetration. After planting, maintain daytime temperatures between 24–26°C and nighttime temperatures between 20–22°C. Once the shoots appear, adjust the temperature to 22–24°C during the day and 18–22°C at night. When the plants reach 15 cm, lower the daytime temperature to 20–22°C and the nighttime to 16–18°C. During harvesting, keep the daytime temperature around 18°C and the nighttime between 14–16°C. Harvesting should occur when the garlic reaches 35 cm in height and the leaves begin to slightly bend. The first cut can be made 20 days after planting. After the first harvest, allow the roots to heal, then re-water and wait another 20 days for the second cut when the new shoots reach 30 cm. This method ensures continuous production and maximizes yield.
