Six hours before transfer, stop feeding the chickens to prevent digestive issues. Ensure that feed and water are available in the new housing area. It’s also recommended to increase the vitamin content in the feed by 1–2 times, and add vitamin C to the drinking water to help reduce stress during the journey.
Choose the right time for transfer. Avoid moving chickens during extreme weather conditions such as heat, rain, or snow. In summer, plan the transfer during cooler morning or evening hours, and in winter, choose a warm, sunny midday to minimize environmental stress.
Before moving, sort the chickens by weight to ensure even growth and development. Remove any sick, weak, injured, or underperforming birds to maintain a healthy flock. This helps reduce competition and improves overall welfare.
After the transfer, the chickens may feel unsettled due to the change in environment. Social hierarchies may shift, leading to fights among the birds. Monitor the flock closely and isolate any injured chickens immediately to prevent further harm.
Avoid combining transportation with other stressful events like vaccination. Doing so could exacerbate the birds’ stress levels and compromise their well-being.
